I feel that I am a victim of workplace discrimination due to my mental illness-bipolar disorder. In addition, I think that someone at my former place of employment shared this information with the organization where I applied for a job. I will describe my situation the best that I can.

I applied for a job with a youth organization here in my town. I had a great interview with the childcare director and left with the impression that I would be hired. She said that she just wanted to check my references. I got a call from this woman the next day saying that she could not offer me employment but gave no explanation. When I requested an explanation she just said that she didn't think I would be a good fit for thier program (after saying that she thought I was highly qualified during the interview).

I suspect that she decided not to hire me after talking to my most recent employer. My former place of employment is a private preschool that is full of gossipy staff and parents-a major factor in my choosing to leave there last February. I was recently very suprised to find out that the new director there used to be employed with this youth organization where I applied very recently. I think that she even worked for or with this childcare director that interviewed me.

It is known by some of the staff and parents at the preschool that I suffer from bipolar disorder. My ability to function as an effective teacher has been compromised by my condition in the past. When I left this job last February the former director assured me that she would give me a good reference. She is no longer there.

The bottom line is that someone at my former place of employment said something to the youth organization childcare director that prevented me from being hired. I know that it was someone at the private preschool because it is the only new reference that has been added to my resume in years. I have great references from all my previous employers.
I am very distraut by this, it is completely unfair and if I am correct it is a violation of my rights. Doesn't the Americans with Disabilities Act protect me from something like this?
