I lived in a state that has state income taxes. I must file a rent certificate signed by my land lord that is from the tax year. I no longer live in the state.

At this time, our land lord and us are disputing about who owes who money. We think we should get back some of our deposit and they say that we owe them over $3000.00 in repairs that I did myself. ???

Well that is a story in itself. But because of that, our land lord refuses to sign our rent certificate until we pay them what they are asking. We need that rent certificate to file our state taxes.

Is this extorsion legal??? Can they cause us to be in trouble with our state taxes until they get what they want??? This not only sounds civil, but highly criminal.

Is there any remedy for a crooked land lord???

We need to file our state income taxes. How do we go about getting them to sign???

Thanks in advance.
