My former employer began making changes to our job duties a few years ago. As they cut down on the number of associates to work each line, they began to assign more and more physical duties to us, the shipping inpsectors. We used to simply inspect, test the units, stamp them as approved and send them on their way. They have begun to force all shipping inspectors to not only do the duties I have just mentioned, but also to begin packing these large products into huge shipping packaging.
Keep in mind that Quality Control Shipping Inspectors was once considered to be a "desired postion" that was the excuse the company used for not paying us any extra money for taking on all of the responsibiity for the quality of each product and more of less signing our own names to each unit. Many, many of us shipping inspectors have already spent many years out in the production services. And that is where most of us wore out our joints, hands, shoulders and backs in the first place. So quite frankly, that is why we posted to the Quality positions, as the work was somewhat lighter and many of us figured that this was the only way that we were going to be able to hang in there until retirement time.
Well, the Big Bosses have other ideas. They began this "reorganizing" all over the plant. They hit areas first where people had been there for a long period of time. They shut down departments and place people with experience and seniroity where ever they wanted them throughout the plant. Runnig some people out of the company completely because they to were much older now and could not handle the changes in job duties.
So Quality was not the first department to get hit and it most likely was not the last one either.
Many of us older people feel like the company deliberately made our jobs more difficult for us, because they knew that some of us would have to leave as we would not be abe to deal with the pain.
I, and several of the others at this company feel that we have been discriminated against because of our ages, the years we have already worked for this employer and the fact that many of us regualarly recorded the pain that we fellt on a monthly basis. More than one comment was made by upper management that they could run that place with temps. That they needed ot get rid of anyone who has been there more than 5 years as that is when they really become a repetitive strain injury risk at 5 or more years.
