I was "hired" by a nationally recognized company in December 2007 to start working in January 2008. Before I was able to start working, I moved to another state for a differnet job. I called this company and said that I wouldn't be able to accept to job.
To make a long story short, about a month after I moved to another state, I received a check from the company I don't work for. When I looked at the pay stub, I noticed that taxes had been withdrawn from my check. I immediately called and said that I never worked and that the checks were in error. I've since received a total of four checks in total.
My question is can I deposit these checks into my account "legally?" My reason for wondering this is that since they've taken taxes, it's going to be an uphill battle in 2009 to convince the IRS that I never stepped foot into their workplace, but I was paid for this time.
I am wondering what is the worst thing that can happen if I were to deposit these checks into my account? If the company has put a stop payment on them, then the money would disappear from my account, but what if they didn't put a stop payment on them? Would they come after it?
This is a decision that I have been dealing with for the past month now, and I am trying to get the best leal answer. Thanks for your time and I look forward to hearing an answer soon.
