On December 6th of this year I had my locked car stolen from my property in Pennsylvania. The car was recovered abandoned in New Jersey 7 days later. The 2 individuals from New York that were involved in the theft (they were linked by fingerprints found on my car) were arrested in Maryland with another stolen vehicle. They apparently were on a week long crime spree stealing at least 4 cars and 15-17 purses in 4 differnt states.
The problem is the hassle Nationwide insurance is putting me through to get my car repaired, through no fault of my own. After they finally agreed to tow my car to the PA. dealership where I purchased my car and still have my car warranty through, I received an appraisal from a claims adjuster out of Philadelphia and a check for 1800 dollars made out to my wife and GMAC (the car is financed through them). He summized there was at least 2300 dollars of damage and with my 500 dollar deductible that amounts to 1800 dollars. Through a phone conversation with this adjustor he admitted to me that he didn't check out the entire vehicle, only the one side of the car that sideswiped another car as the driver was eluding a fire department roadblock in Pennsylvania.
My dealer is currently doing a thorough appraisal of the damages and laughed at the check they sent me. He warned me to do not dare cash that check. Further, my dealer cannot believe i am held accountable for a deductible in times of theft. He said he knows of no other insurance company who does this to a person with collision and comprehensive insurance. This, in addition to the fact that the duo responsible have been arrested. Also, I was informed that the rental car I'm currently driving will not be covered by insurance after 30 days (they are paying 15 dollars per day -- i'm covering the rest).
I was then informed that if the car is totalled (it has a current book value of 6900 dollars) that i would receive 6400 dollars and would be expected to pay GMAC immediately out of that for the remainder of my loan. This is over 250 dollars a month for the next 16 months for a total of about 4000 dollars. This would leave me with just over 2000dollars to use toward another car.
How can this be. How is it that I, the victim in this case, seem to be getting victimized. Can anyone help??? I certainly don't seem to be in good hands with Nationwide.
