I'm in desperate need of some sort of legal advice or route of action to take. This morning I came out to my car which I just recently bought here in Los Angeles. Not even a month ago (I'm a student from Wisconsin). Somebody had ran into the back of it during the night and it is now totaled. I do not have insurance on the car yet since I just bought it and don't even have the title fully in my name yet (still dealing with the DMV). Is there a grace period for attaining insurnace afte purchasing a car here? What am I supposed to do with the car? They know who the guy was that hit me since the license plate was ripped from the car after it ran into the back of mine. Can I still collect insurance money for it without having insurance? Should I hire a lawyer to handle the situation?
Please help me if you have any answers or any information as to what I should do.
Thanks,
P

Foremost, you need to confer with a lawyer to help you with your predicaments.
Hints: It is illegal for vehicles to be operated without meeting the requirements of having auto insurance coverage. In California, driving without insurance is a serious offense. Failure to show proof of insurance, especially when requested may result in fines and or suspended license.

You are bound to pay what you owe. You are responsible for the car as well you are liable for whatever damages that may involve in that respect.
Should I hire a lawyer to handle the situation? Yes

You cannot claim insurance when you don't have any.
To give you the best lights, refer your case to a lawyer who is adeptly knowledgeable with insurance laws.
California Law does provide that it is illegal to drive without insurance coverage or to operate the vehicle wanting any insurance. In fact, it is considered as a serious offense.
There may be some grace period provided, but (in some respect) certainly your case is beyond its coverage.
