Need some good advice.

If I choose to answer a court summons/ law suit with out an attorney. is that my choice? What happens after I answer the complaint and send it back? Do I just wait to hear from the opposing party's lawyer? help! I am being sued. The complaint says Law division. Is that considered small claims?

Any help is welcome.
