This is a bit long but I will try and summarize.
I was the victim of an internet scam by which a Russian software company was to send US customer credit card charges through my PayPal account and I was to forward the money back to the company for a fee.
I contacted PayPal 2-3 times and verified with them that once they transfered the funds to my account that the funds are verified legitimate. Of course after a number of these transactions they turned out to be stolen credit cards. I provided all the info I had to PayPal for them to investigate and I filed police reports for the scam. By then $5700 had been stolen.
PayPal sent me to collection for the $5700 1.5 years ago. That collection agency closed the case after I explained the fraud to them.
Now PayPal sent a different collection agency after me.
My feeling is that PayPal is just as liable as me, as they are the ones who accepted charges on the stolen credicards and fraudulant PayPal accounts.
Do I have any recourse but to pay? Any advice, or how to negotiate?
