I bought a laptop on craigslist that was stolen. THe guy I bought it from claimed he bought it from an Earnst auction. It also had the laptop bag, docking station and charger etc so I believed it was a personal computer. I resold it on here and now the police want to investigate me about where I got it from. I have no way of contacting the guy who bought it from me since his ad was probably expired or removed
Now here are some elements
The laptop was stolen in a burglary according to the detective. In my add I stated the lock has been chipped and I got it from an auction (Even though I got it from a guy who claimed he got it from an auction). I openely resold it in a non criminal way in day time at my house and offered a full warranty etc. as it required repair. I have a consistent record of buying and selling over $3000 in items that I CAN provide proof for but all on ebay. It just anything that was bought on craigslist have no receipt or proof.
Questions are:
-Did I do very much wrong in this situation
-what is the punishment if I am prosecuted
-How can I prove I didnt know it was stolen...or
how can he prove that I did know
-Any other opinions or direction
