I was recently served an eviction notice & I feel my landlord is doing this as retaliation b/c I submitted a claim to HUD against them for discrimination. I have never been late on my rent. I was never notified that my payment was late prior to eviction. I signed a new lease on 11/21/08 in which I was told I was being offered 1 free month rent for 12/'08 and a $28 off my rent. I only got this offer b/c the girl who offered was new in the office & probably not yet aware of the issues I was having w/them. I went in and signed a lease, which I could not see b/c the lady in the office covered the document with her hand and then lifted the remaining pages up only so that I could sign. I signed b/c I was just frustrated & tired of dealing with them. However, I did request a copy of the lease & was immediately told the printer suddenly not working & that she would call me back in a few minutes to give me a copy of the lease. I never got that call. I wrote a letter requesting a copy of the lease & received no response. After I requested a hearing I received a copy of the lease, which had been altered. The initial page that I signed was trashed and I was given a whole new lease that increased my rent, this document has no signature on it. This was done with several documents in the lease. I go to court Monday, how do I fight this when I stupidly signed papers without looking at them?

im kinda in the same situation, i would recomend contacting the aclu in your state they have a website you can go to. if the landlord falsified the lease that you originlaly signed i think they could get into teouble. my landlord sent me a copy of the lease that i alreadyu original y had except this one had a new paragrapgh on it after the sent ou t a notice to vacate, i contacted teh aclu this evening and waiting for a response but the law for that varies from state to state.

thank you, i wasn't sure who to contact so i actually emailed my local aclu and i submitted complaints with the u.s. department of justice and the south carolina human affairs commission. i'm still waiting on a response though. i'm hoping one of these organizations will get involved.

I would agree with what has been said. It may end up being a waste of time but it might make you feel better.
