I was recently terminated from a job with a city government when they discovered that I am a registered sex offender. I live, work, and register in Texas. I was never asked about my criminal history (24 years ago), I was never given a copy of the city's employee manual, and I was told by the city manager that I did not violate any city policy, but he was firing me "to protect the citizens of his city from people like me". I am a registered sex offender in Texas. I was convicted in 1985. I was 18 and I had a 14 year old girlfriend. We got caught in bed by family, and the rest you can guess (Art 22.011 Texas Penal Code). We later married, and she is the mother of my son. I understand there is a way to have my name removed from the sex offender registry, I have read the law (Subchapter G Art 62.301 Texas Code of Criminal Procedure), but I need some advice on how to proceed. It was almost 25 years ago, and I am still suffering for my adolesent mistake. I am not a predator or a monster, just an honest hardworking guy that can use some assistance right now. I just lost my job because of my registration on the states website, and have been turned down for two other jobs since. Can someone please help me.
