Needs advice

I am unsure if this pertains to civil law or not, if not please advise me. I was mayor in a small town in PA for about 10 years. I resind in 2005. Recently i found out that 2 council people made allegations to the attorney general that I did illegal crimes while I was in office. The allegations were proven false, but it was in all the local papers and has made me look very bad to my friends and really hard on my family. My question is? Can I file a lawsuit against these council people for filing false allegations against me, and if I can, what kind?

I am not a lawyer...but it sounds like a slander and defromation of character case.....if no one responds to this, I would seek a real attorney in your state and get real legal advice on this
