I entered into a lease in April with my landlord. I have lived here since January under another lease. My roommate/landlord was restationed in Africa. Before entering into my current lease I asked if it would be ok for me to get a dog when they left. I was told yes. When they drew up the current lease no clause about a pet was added to this lease even though there was one in the old lease. I got a dog last weekend and notified my landlord prior, but received no reply. Now she is saying that she wants me to add an ammendment to my lease and pay a 500$ pet deposit. I have several emails from her stating it is ok for me to have the dog and nothing in the lease against it. She is also saying that because there is nothing in the lease against it, that means I cant have one and if I dont pay the deposit she will terminate my lease. The lease in in North Carolinia and it is for a year unless I am restationed by the Army. Can anybody give me advice? Can she do this? Is she right?
