contempt of court from divorce decree

My ex-husband had me arrested for contempt of court relating to a 1992 nissan sentra that i agreed to take over payments on when we divorced in 1996. in 1997 i had to let it go back because i could not pay for it,he said he would help me because i was hurt at the time, but he never did and i didn't have anything in writing for child support or that he would help with car. meanwhile in aug of 06 he got a letter from car place so he hired a attorney,he told me i would just have to pay 900.00 in attorney fees and the car place would contact me so i said o.k, well feb.5,2007 a cop came to my door and arrested me, i had no explanation except i had to pay 8,000 cash to get out of jail i could not see a judge nor get bond. i didn't get any contact information about the car or who has it and the money would go back to my x. the paper did say i was in contempt, but i didn't get a court date to show up to be able to make payments on it so how can he do this without me getting some sort of warning? and not getting any type of papers showing who had the car, and the interest owed on it and that i paid it off? my ex nor his lawyer will not give me any numbers or the name of the place who is suing. isn't there a statue of limitations on something 10 years ago? and why didn't the car place contact me? i am so confused and i cannot afford a attorney after paying such a large amount of cash to get out of jail. i was told they don't set bonds in civil cases like this i had to pay my ex the full amount to get out of jail. and he is supposed to put it toward the car.
