How do I adopt my step children?

I live in North Carolina, and I'm wanting to know how I can adopt my two step-children whom I've raised since they were babies. Their biological father has never been in the picture. In fact, he's never paid a dime of child support, and we don't even know where he is. How should my wife and I proceed?

I believe that if your parents did Adopt them, you may need to do an adoption with termination of parental rights yourself, if you want to adopt them.If they have a guardianship, they may be able to resign from guardianship, and have you appointed as new guardians.Either way, you need to find out for certain what the situation is, and what your parents think about the situation.
