Thirty years ago my then 10 year old son found a rusty and dirty pistol in the woods next to our home. It looked as if it had been buried there a long time, maybe years. I took it from him and the next day took it to work and showed it to a gun collector friend. He offered me $25 and I took it. I never considered the NY gun law or that it may have been used in a crime. A TV program reminded me of it and if it was in fact used in a crime, I'd like to make it right. But I'm 75 now and need to know if I am exposed to any legal liability if I contact the police where I lived 30 years ago.
