Hello. I would like to get married but am concerned about the 'equitable distribution' laws in Michigan regarding divorce. I prefer 'community property' laws regarding property distribution in a divorce like California has. My question is this: How can I get married and not fall under Michigan's 'equitable distribution' law? I own a few properties in Michigan. Is moving to California and establishing residency enough? What about getting married in foreign country without 'equitable distribution' laws? If 'equitable distribution' is my only choice I will just stay single. I know about pre-nuptial agreements but Michigan judges frequently ignore them. Thank you.

After 33 years of marriage "practice" and two divorces, there is nothing like being single and holding on to your own property. But that's your choice.
Contact an Attorney in your area "before" you manipulate yourself into a corner.
Good Luck!

I recommend contacting a lawyer - they may know a loophole in the property law. good luck!
