Mexico makes a concerted effort to reach out to Mexicans in the United States so that they continue to think of themselves as Mexicans first. Thats because about 15 of the working age population of Mexico now resides in the U.S. and remittances back home account for more of the countrys GDP than tourism. They also amended their constitution in 1998 to allow dual citizenship. The upshot of all this is that the Mexican government doesnt want Mexicans in the U.S. to assimilate and begin to think of themselves as Americans. But they do want them to become American citizens and vote in U.S. elections.
