My dad died when I was 12. It was my understanding he left me money. My step-mother (with whom I have a bad relationship) insisted that the money would only be distributed to me if I attended college. She failed to mention this until I turned down a scholarship and joined the Army at 18. I didn't question her on the matter.
However, my younger brother (her real son) recently turned 18 and joined the Army - guess what? He just got a check for 50k.
So now I question whether or not the whole "you must attend college" thing was true.....it didn't seem to apply to him...
Could she have spent the money my dad left for me? Is that legal? I still speak with my brother and it turns out she's "borrowed" money from him (30K). She is abusing her role as a mother.
I don't know what actions I can take. I no longer care about the money. I am now married and have a child of my own. I guess I'm just hurt that something was left to me by my dad, and it was never given to me.
Any help?
