public defender fees is this legal????

i went to court for a show cause hearing because i was accused of violating a B.S. ppo against me. after being in and out of the court so many times i decieded i couldn't afford to have a lawyer and wanted to represent myself. well at that time i was told i was not allowed to represent myself and the judge issued a court appointed attorney to represent me. 1 year after that i started recieving bills for attorney fees. is thi even legal? i was never informed of any fees upfront nor did i request an attorney or sign any paperwork. and at that the court appointed fees are higher then what it would have cost me to use my original lawyer. the reason i'm asking about this is because now the court is threatening to either put me in jail or garnish my wages over the fees. i don't know if it makes any difference but i live in michigan. also if there is somthing wrong here can anyone give me a link to anything about this.
