How to find a company's registered agent?

Please help. I have to track down the 'registered agent' for a major company in order that I can file against them in small claims court.

(I assumed it was a bad idea to contact the company directly and ask. I thought the chances of them even telling me were very slim. Is this correct?)

I don't know how to set about doing this. I have tried the company website, without any luck. They have a huge national profile, so I don't even know which state to look in.

I need to file my claim asap, and have all the other paperwork ready. If anyone has any ideas, I would be REALLY glad to hear from them!

secretary of state for your state. Ususally available on the web. In tn, you can type in the name of the business and review their corporate charter. corporate officers and registered agents are named, at least in tn.
