Hi. I have questions about how parental guarantees work in leasing situations. I used to live in an apartment where I was attending college. The first year that lived in the apartment complex, I was told that because I was under 21 years of age that my parents had to sign a parental guarantee, that in a nutshell, stated that if I was unable to pay the rent fees that they (my parents) were held responsible. I was told that if they did not sign it, then they woud run my credit to see if I could qualify for the apartment on my own.
The next year I decided to change units but and the price of my rent even increased. My parents did not sign the parental guarantee the at this time. I ended up not wanting to reside in the complex anymore and attempted to try to get out of the lease. I told the property manager that my parents did not sign the parental guarantee, and he stated that it would be transferred from my other apartment.
Is that right what he told me? The apartment is now on my credit report and I was just wondering am I still liable? Do I have a case against the Apartment complex?
