I lived in an apartment for 2 years in MA and have recently moved out. When I moved in the apartment was GROSS, not cleaned at all - we asked the landlord to reimburse us for the cleaning, never saw the money. She kept raising the rent but wouldn't put a penny into the apartment. After we moved she sent us a bill for $300 for cleaning. We refuse to pay - we swept the floors and wiped everything down before leaving and considering we kept it clean anyway it was perfectly fine. She is now taking us to court for that money. The lease says we are to leave the apartment clean and tenantable - how do I go about defending the fact that it WAS clean (we're idiots, we didn't take pictures) and that just becuase it wasn't clean to her standards (she was a crazy neat freak) doesn't mean it wasn't tenantable. Also - when she raised the rent she claimed her mortgage rate went up though one of the realtors came by said she has no mortgage (he was complaining because she is so cheap she wouldn't slap a fresh coat of paint on to help rent the place faster!!!) - is there anywhere i can look to find out whether she has a mortgage or if she was lying?
