I was a student when I moved into my apartment. The agreement stated that the unit was wired for cable, internet, and phone. When we moved into the unit it was wired for all three, but we got no signal. So, I called the company I was with in my last apartment and they came out and set everything up and there was still no signal. They told me that they needed roof access because that is where all the cables came from, including the box and splitter. So, I called my landlord and she said no way, they need to do a new wall fish (through concrete). With this knowledge, I called back my cable company and they came out again. They said no way. They can't go through concrete walls to do a wall fish and they had been working this building for years, and they needed roof access. I called the landlord then and she talked with the cable guy and told them they had to do a wall fish and she was not going to give roof access. Well, this went on for almost a month until she decided to finally give them roof access. They went up to the roof, and they were done in ten minute and I had my internet, cable, and telephone. During this time I canceled my bundle, and got a cell phone, and was without internet (huge problem for a student and someone job hunting). Is there a way I can request a rent credit, or something similar for the lack of utilities for almost a month? It was very inconvenient and frustrating. Thanks a lot.

You may be able to get part of your rent refunded, as you are paying rent for a fully wired building, so you may get the % of your rent that goes towards this. However, if the contract states that 'the building is wired' then it does not specifically say that you DO get internet and phone access. Did you go through an estate agents? Maybe speak to them instead of directly to your landlord.

definitely entitled to having some of your rent reduced. It will be a challenge to get it, but you can always ask.
