Recently the property that adjoins ours was sold. The new owners just had it surveyed and the lines are totally not like we were told they were. I cannot afford a surveyor at this time, but my septic system is now on "their property" and "their line" is 1 foot from my basement steps. Is there a "21 year law" or some other law that states if something was in place for numerous years, that it cannot be changed? Do they have to give me access to my septic, or can they make me move it? Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.

Surveys are not always correct. If you can't afford your own take a copy of the "new" one and compare it to a record copy. Call the county recorder's office & see if they have anything on file, if they don't ask them if they know of where you may find a plat of survey. There should be some original document somewhere that subdivided your property at some point in time. Note that this is true if you live in a rural or urban area. In end you may need to hire your own surveyor to straighten it out, hope this works out for you.

Depending where you are, there is such a thing called "adverse possession". I am going through a similar situation. It can be anywhere from 10 to 25 years, but if you occupied the land then you have a right to it.
