Last week our agent called and requested our 21 year old son send his insurance declorations page to him. (Our son previously had insurance with this same company but changed insurance companies 3 months ago.) Our agent said the company ran an address check and found out our son was living with us and since we were receiving the discounted over 50 year old rate the company needed our son's information to keep from raising our rates. Our agent said that if our son did not send this information the company would automaticly rate our son as a driver on our insurance because the company feels he would be a potential driver of our vehicles. Our agent even implied the company could even cancel our policy if our son did not comply. We have been a customer in good standing for 19 years.
Is it legal for companies to check the address of their customers to see who is living at that address? Isn't this an invasion of privacy?
Is it legal for companies to use these findings to raise their customers rates or cancel the customers insurance? Isn't this strong arming?
If these actions are legal, do all insurance companies use this practice to increase customer insurance rates?
