Hi - I recently received my property tax bill. Long story short, the market value went from $203,500 to $318,500 in one year. I have made NO improvements or changes. Trust me, my house is in worse shape than it was last year.
So, I called the county tax commissioner's office to inquire, and they determined that they have made an error. A neighbor 2 houses up made major improvements, and they have the wrong address in their computer so my house is showing up as having improvements, when it has NOT.
I received the bill at the end of August. I have contacted the office several times to have a new property tax statement issued. They are telling me that I will just have to pay it and apply for a refund next year.
HELLO? Why I am I paying for THEIR mistake? What if I don't have the money to pay it? And I can only imagine the nighmare of applying for a refund.
What, legally, can I do? Thanks-
