In June there was a fire on our apartment. It was an accident but none the less our fault. We did not have renters insurance :-( The landlord is asking for an additional $3500 in addition to keeping our deposit. My question is HOW liable are we for the damages? I mean, if he had said $6000 are we supposed to just pay it? I have asked repeatedly for copies of receipts from the landlord for what he said was replaced but he won't give them to me. Furthermore, what about depreciation? Doesn't that place a role in costs too? He says that I have to pay to replace half of the carpet. I believe the carpet is at least ten years old. I think he is trying to get new stuff out of us instead of being fair. I am thinking of taking this to court but I can't find any law that says what exactly we are required to pay whether it is just depreciation or what. This happened in Washington state. Any help would be GREAT! Thanks in advance.
